Footer navigation and SEO

27th January 2006

Using the footer navigation has a value from both a usability & SEO perspective. However, you need to be careful that it does not appear as spam, or a link farm. Google is vigilantly pursuing and penalizing sites that use “footer spam. Link farms typically contain a series of different sites all linking to each other to try to gain some link popularity benefit. If you are just linking to your internal pages, it is not considered a link farm. It is best to use the footer navigation to link to sub-pages within your own site. Using the footer navigation is an excellent way to take advantage of using anchor text, keyword rich links as well as good for usability, because the visitor doesn’t need to scroll back to the top of the page. Additionally, you can take advantage of adding text below the footer navigation which has keyword rich content.
